1962

"So let the true war begin. It is not a war between West and East, between capitalism and Communism, or democracy and totalitarianism; it is rather the deep war which has gone on for six centuries in the nature of Western man, it is the war between the conservative and the rebel, between authority and instinct... [It is] the war we can expect if the cold war will end. It is the war that will take life and power from the center and give it over to left and to right, it is the war that will teach us our meaning.”

-- Norman Mailer debating William F. Buckley, Jr

I loathe Mailer. Loathe his writing, loathe his posturing, loathe the way he treated his wife (stabbed her with a kitchen knife), and this picture is pretty vile too. (Great photo, just a horrid subject). Tell us what you really think, you prissy Retriever, you!

It captures the man as the very embodiment of phallic narcissism. His right hand is empty, but it isn't difficult to imagine his stabbing, little cigar.
