I wonder how these kids developed.

From the looks of the picture I'd say that the three kids in the foreground display an awareness that may be different from what we require or hold as normal from children that age.

Middle class based on their clothing?

Hi Ted,

It's difficult to judge these things without a sense of the standards at the time. The location is a very poor, crowded neighborhood, in or near Little Sicily (Little Hell) on the Near North Side of Chicago. Before the Sicilians settled there it was called Swede Town, presumably because Swedes settled there. In the forties, the decayed neighborhood was leveled by the city. Public housing (Cabrini Green) was built on part of the land.
