Sam Fox, a GOP donor who helped sink John Kerry's bid for the presidency by contributing $50,000 to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, has been rewarded by George Bush with a nomination for the ambassadorship to Belgium. Of course, Bush didn't say the nomination was a reward because the Bush administration had absolutely nothing to do with the Swift Boat smear campaign. Heck, Bush even said so and we all know that Bush would never lie about lying.
Fox, who would very much like to win Senate approval for his nomination, would never have anything to do with telling lies either, if he could help it. Speaking to Senator Kerry during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on his nomination, Fox said 'Senator, you're a hero,' and no 527 group 'can take that away from you.' Fox explained that he doesn't know anything about the 1000 or so 527s that have been the recipients of his largess. He explained that he simply gave the money because 'Karl Rove someone must have asked.'
Fox also described the presence of tax exempt 527s like the Swift Boat group in presidential politics as 'disgraceful' and 'terrible,' but rationalized his blind generosity to the tax exempt political smear machines saying 'that's the world we live in, that's what it's come to — it's unfortunate.'
Good answer, Mr. Fox. As long as we live in a disgraceful and terrible world, one might as well become a disgraceful and terrible human being. After all, if you become disgraceful and terrible enough, you might even be rewarded with an ambassadorship.
Asked about Fox's nomination, the president said that he had no idea that Fox had donated to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. 'I nominated him because Karl Rove or someone must have asked,' Bush explained.
