Joan Fontaine (above) was the younger sister of Olivia de Haviland (below).
In 1942, both sisters were nominated for academy awards in the Best Actress category. Olivia was nominated for Hold Back The Dawn. Joan won for Alfred Hitchcock's Suspicion. Joan had been nominated previously for Rebecca (1940). In addition to taking home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress (Gone With the Wind, 1939), De Haviland won for Best Actress in 1946 (To Each His Own) and 1948 (The Heiress). De Haviland was also nominated in 1949 for The Snake Pit.
As children, the sisters feuded bitterly and continued to have a strained relationship into their adulthood. The two have not spoken since 1975.
