22-year-old Doris Day was well-known as a singer in 1946 when she was photographed by Gottlieb, but her film career did not begin until two years later. Day was approached about a movie role in 1948 after she sang at a private party at the home of composer Jule Styne who recommended her for a role in Romance on the High Seas. After a failed first marriage, Day had intended to give up show business altogether and return to life with her family in Ohio.
*Gottlieb was best known for his many photographs of jazz musicians.

My wife Barbara somewhat looks like Doris Day. Years ago (late 80's) my wife accompanied me on a business trip to San Louis Obispo. The next morning while at breakfast a young man (late 30 something) approached Barbara and said something to the effect "Miss Day would you please autograph this for me?" Thinking this was some sort of prank she politely refused and replied to him that she wasn't Miss Day. He became somewhat miffed at her refusal and said something to the effect, "All you celebrities are alike - you think your too good to be ordinary." and again, politely, presented the item he wanted signed. So she signed it: Doris Day I am not. I'm Barbara from Spanish Fort, AL. He looked at it smiled politely and went on his way.

God bless Doris Day. She knew she couldn't act and refused to watch her movies when they come on the TV, but if she happens to hear an old recording of herself: she knows "she did it".
Dorie had a beautiful body but refused to "use it".
I didn't care for her films either, but I think she was fantastic in Love Me or Leave Me.
