This is an 1870 photo of Nate Salsbury (1846-1902). Salsbury was an entertainer, comedian and promoter who was the principal owner of Wild Bill's "Wild West" Show. One of Salsbury's weirder projects was an 1895 show called Black America -- A Gigantic Exhibition of Negro Life and Character. The show included a cast of 500 African-Americans who... uh... portrayed Negro life and character.
In case you're wondering about Nate's alarming dental work, filing uneven and chipped teeth was a form of cosmetic dentistry back in the day (before they had local anesthetics!)

His fascinating obituary in the New York Times:

Psychoanalyst should widen their horizon by making blogs or accounts online so that people can also reach them when being needed.
Dr. X reply: Sage advice from a spammer for a cosmetic dentistry clinic. I delete a couple of these a day, but this one amused me.
