Paul Newman announced in the end of May that he has retired from acting. During his career, Newman was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won Best Actor for his role in The Color of Money. An actor and director, Newman has also won Golden Globe, Cannes and Emmy awards. In addition to his film career, Newman raced cars for the Bob Sharp Racing Team and has been very active in philanthropic and charitable endeavors founding a camp for seriously ill children in Connecticut, as well as the highly successful Newman's Own product line. All of the profits from Newman's Own sales go to charity and, to date, contributions exceed $220 million.
Joanne Woodward was nominated four times for Oscars and won Best Actress for The Three Faces of Eve. Woodward graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 1990, is a trustee of the school, and, like her husband, has been generous with her time and efforts in supporting philanthropic causes and the arts for many years.
In 2000, Woodward took over the reins of the Westport (CT) Country Playhouse, revitalizing the theater and spearheading a successful $30 million fundraising campaign to rebuild the 70-year-old barn/playhouse as a modern theater. The theater, complex hosted a restaurant and tavern for many years and last year Paul Newman opened a new restaurant on the site.
Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward have been married for 49 years.
