This was lunch today at RJ Grunts in Chicago. Incredibly, this is the first time I've ever eaten there. Very '70s.
RJ Grunts was the first of dozens of one-off and multiple-outlet eateries developed by legendary, genius restaurateur, Rich Melman and his many partners. Since Grunts opened in 1971, the company has developed 130 restaurants covering 70 different concepts, virtually all successful. Grunts understandably lost steam over the years, but when Melman announced a couple of years back that the restaurant would close, business surged and pleas from Chicagoans convinced him to keep the place open.
And, no, I didn't eat the whole thing.
