Mike Adamle enjoyed a long and varied TV career after his NFL career ended, but he's been off the air for almost a year, and now he's revealing why. (story here)
It looks like he's another victim of repeated concussions. He has suffered from seizures for the past 19 years, and now he's experiencing dementia and depression. His doctor diagnosed him with CTE, which can only be confirmed post mortem, but given what we know about the condition, that's probably correct.
I must confess, I don't like Mike Adamle based on real life experience with him, but it's difficult to read about what he's going through and watch the videos without my heart going out to him. I hope he can find some consolation somewhere.
I haven't read anything about Jim McMahon lately (another retired Bears QB, younger than Adamle), but last I heard, he was having a tough time with his failing memory.
Knowing what we know now, if I had kids, I think I'd keep them out of football, and maybe even soccer. These retired players are getting hit with dementia when they're so young. They trade a few years of money and glory for even more years of terrible suffering.
