My wife and I are fortunate in that we don't need a car and don't have to deal with those hassles. We're able to afford cabs/ubers when we really need them and otherwise can just walk or take public transport. (I'm also afraid I'd hurt someone, like hit a pedestrian, if I drove regularly. A longshot, but I'm grateful I don't have to take that chance.)

Of course, some people do need a car for their job, etc. And we're both (knock on wood) healthy and in physically good shape (and don't have kids). If any of those were to change, or if our jobs started to require the type of flexibility that a car can bring, then a car would start looking worthwhile.

I've never actually bought a car before, but I imagine I would probably feel as you do. I also am probably an "easy mark" for high pressure salespersons.
