My family came through the hard times of the 1930s. Their advantage? They never knew what it meant to lose everything. They were poor Appalachian folk---'dirt poor' it was called then and still is by some whose genes remember. Anyway, you cannot lose what you've never had. Adversity comes in different forms, but it remains adversity. My grandfather said: you do with what you've got. Same spirit, different continent.
