I went back to my Laplanche and Pontalis to get some clarity on 'perversion'. Freud said that, "Neuroses are the negative of perversions". L + P make it clear that this doens't mean that there's no repression in perversions and plenty in neuroses - rather very different defences are used in perversions. And this is where your comment about the romance with Chavez being perverse is most apt: the defences of perversion are disavowal of reality and splitting.
Incidentally, 'romance' is perfect too. L + P make it clear that Freud only used perversion when referring to the sexual.
