I attended school through eighth grade in Wesson, Mississippi. For our eighth grade field trip we visited the battlefield park at Vicksburg first and then the Sprague before returning home that evening.

Recognizing that things remembered increase in size as one grows older, nevertheless I think that for all of us in that class, especially the boys, visiting that monster was the greatest thrill of our young lives.

We were awed by her sheer size and had the opportunity to see her wheelhouse, boilers and engines and especially that giant wheel.

What a shame that she burned. There will never be another boat of like power and grace.
