The campaign for retiring House Republican Dennis Hastert's 14th district seat has been ugly. Democratic party unknown, Jim Foster, and well-known Republican, Jim Oberweis, were spending 1/2 million dollars each per week here on TV ads, most of them negative. In today's special election, Foster defeated Oberweis 52%-48%.
I'm surprised Oberweiss lost. A traditional values, conservative businessman with a clean reputation, Oberweis is retired from running the family business, Oberweis Dairy in Illinois. He has unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination to run for the senate twice and the governorship once. I thought he'd found his race with Hastert's retirement from the heavily Republican 14th district, which is Oberweis's home district.
In a non-stop barrage of ads, Foster, a retired Fermi Lab physicist, hammered Oberweis on his support for Bush and the war ("a permanant occupation"). And Oberweiss gave as good as he got. But, it isn't over just yet. The two men are expected to square off again in the November general election.
