not so sure about that one.

Bella, the Rhodesian Ridgeback, will hide a rawhide bone until she is certain that she can enjoy it without having to share with the other two dogs.

whereas half of the clients I see would have little need for psychotherapy if they could develop an ability for delayed gratification and impulse control

I think the author is anthropomorphising; things he finds disgusting are not necessarily those his dog will.
My dog absolutely finds other dogs excrement disgusting - she sidesteps it/jumps out of the way if it's in her path.
