Although some conservative bloggers questioned McCain volunteer Ashley Todd's now discredited claim that she was robbed and beaten by an Obama supporter who carved a backward 'B' into her cheek, a startling number of credulous conservative bloggers pushed the story with enthusiasm. I wasn't going to write about this until I ran across a post that demonstrates just how twisted people become when ideology completely overtakes their ability to face facts.
Yesterday, blogger Red Alerts ranted about the "barbarity" of the attack and claimed that it "[typifies] the mindset of Obama supporters." He continued his hysterical rant, attacking the mainstream media and the 'lefty blogs':
What are the chances of lefty blogs or the MSM picking up this story? I say slim because this is secretly what they all want for America. This is the true face of liberalism. They call us “The Crazies” but when was the last time you heard of a Republican carving a big fat “W” on the head of some hippy?
Okay, then the police announced that Todd made the story up. What's a shrieking ideologue to do? Denial time: defend the hoaxster and smear investigators by comparing them to the police who beat up Rodney King:
Update: Police claim it’s a hoax. The police also claim Rodney King deserved the beating he got and that Malcolm X was shot by random assailants.
But then the hoaxter confessed. What's a desperate ideologue to do? Time for another update. This time, he declares. Ms. Todd might be a lefty provocateur:
You see? Now, Red Alerts thinks that Ashley Todd is an Obama operative who perpetrated the hoax to send conservatives into a frenzy of outrage at Obama. Then, just at the right moment, when conservative rage reached a fever pitch, she confessed the hoax to the police. She'll take the fall in order to discredit McCain and the right-wing blogosphere. Maybe Red Alerts also believes that Obama will pardon all his jailed secret political agents after the election.
