There's a difference between cynicism and questioning. Cynicism is the opposite side of naivitee. One side is unquestioning acceptance, the other side is unquestioning assumption of negative motivations or consequences. Questioning is good. Enquiry is good. Examination and scrutiny and consideration of evidence, options, probable or possible consequences are all good. I think the current adulation of Obama is a reaction to the similarly all encompassing rage & fear after 9-11 followed by disillusion and fear later on. I expect the adulation will wear off as fear tends to be longer lasting than infatuation. And at that point I hope that there won't be disillusion but questioning and enquiry and thoughtfulness.

Good points, Lilian.
