Did you hear about the Chicago landlord suing a former tenant for defamation over this tweet?
Realty is seeking $50,000 from Chicagoan Amanda Bonnen for sharing that
tweet with 22 friends who were following her on twitter. Horizon
has been in an ongoing dispute with Ms. Bonnen who had already filed
her own lawsuit against the company.
Speaking on behalf of Horizon Realty, Jeffrey Michael explained:
"We're a 'sue first, ask questions later' kind of an organization"
Okay, so the company took that back after they hired a PR firm, although I do wonder, as a practical matter, whether you can really un-ring that bell.
Maybe Horizon has a good case against Bonnen (what do I know?), but it's hard for me to imagine that a tweet shared with 22 people did 50k worth of harm to the company. I would think that worldwide scorn associated with the libel suit and Yelp reviews of Horizon Realty, like this one, would concern Horizon's management more.
