Freddie Kafer, a very immature little newsie selling Saturday Evening Posts and newspapers at the entrance to the State Capitol. He did not know his age, nor much of anything else. He was said to be 5 or 6 years old. Nearby, I found Jack who said he was 8 years old, and who was carrying a bag full of Saturday Evening Posts, which weighed nearly 1/2 of his own weight. The bag weighed 24 pounds, and he weighed only 55 pounds. He carried this bag for several blocks to the car. Said he was taking them home. Sacramento, California.

"Young Cigar makers in Englahardt & Co., Tampa, Fla. There boys looked under 14. Work was slack and youngsters were not being employed much. Labor told me in busy times many small boys and girls are employed. Youngsters all smoke. Witness Sara R. Hine."
I received several email replies to my post on immigration and boundaries. Almost all were thoughtful and polite, but a couple insinuated that I don't know what I'm talking about because I don't have to deal with illegal immigrants in significant numbers.
20/20 continued its excellent series of bystander experiments last night. I strongly recommend this six minute clip on racially biased reactions to bicycle thieves.
After watching that clip, check out the follow-up investigation into bike thieves and gender bias. It is truly an embarrassment to men.
Several other clips from the program are worth watching, including bystander reactions to a man trying to take advantage of an extremely intoxicated young woman in a bar, boutique shopper reactions to racial profiling and bystander reactions to a store clerk stealing a winning lottery ticket.
doubts about the power of unconscious biases? Watch this: while white kids vandalize a car in a parking lot, white bystanders do nothing. Black kids dozing in a car in the same parking lot trigger calls to the police.
