Oddly and horribly, charging him may be the quickest, easiest way to get him evaluated and then assure treatment.

You are on the inside looking out. It is incredibly difficult to get a civil petition for commitment approved for any length of time beyond 10 days. (That's true in at least two states, and I have little reason to believe the other 48 are that much different.)

And frankly, being insured and having some money doesn't help. Neither does it help to have professional pleas added to the family's for forced treatment.

The reason is mostly that there are few facilities left. And in a great irony, someone indigent, on medicaid, or with criminal charges has the best chance of getting a bed in one of those places.

Everyone else, especially those with insurance, better not have problems that can't be sorted out with medication in 10 days.
