The Guardian Angels are passing out leaflets calling Mag Mile, Muggers Mile.
...Chicago police quickly panned the Guardian Angels' concerns as overblown. The department's crime data suggest strong-arm robberies, like the most recent high-profile one last weekend, have dropped sharply over the past couple of years, according to a Tribune analysis.
... here is where CompStat really shines. Reclassify the crimes from "Strong Arm Robbery" to "Theft from Person" and --tada!!!-- Instant drop in violent crime. You don't think they're doing it? How about those juveniles that got caught the other day? The one had another smart phone and was charged with "Theft of Lost/Mislaid Property" probably because no one could identify who committed the actual robbery.
I've seen more police in that area and the the police are keeping tabs on arrivals at the underground stations. Recently, there have been one or two cops watching the stops north of the river, but after bad weekends there can be as many as 6 with a mean-looking dog watching the turnstyles. Bet there will be extra watchers next weekend.
