After identifying about 400 people on my mother's side, I decided to drill down and trace my mother's maiden name back to my 11th great-grandfather, which is as far back as the available records go for her name. I also identified the spouses of these men. Got birth dates, marriage dates and death dates for just about all of them.
I have 8,190 other great grandparents at that level and about 16,000 grandparents total at that level and nearer, so there is still some work to be done.
Back in the 1600s, one of my greatx grandfathers had a first wife before the spouse who was mother to my direct ancestor. I discovered that he married the first wife when she was age 12. They had a child when she was 14 and she was dead at 17. Poor thing.
The child died three years after the mother died.
Anyway, it was the 1600s. Still, I couldn't resist attaching the following notation to the wedding date: "She was 12. Just sayin'."
