I have just received the very sad news that esteemed Mississippi law blogger and longtime regular reader of this blog, Tom Freeland, has died. I assume it happened today because Tom last visited my blog at about 10:30 this morning.
I don't know any of the details, but another longtime reader with connections to Mississippi and Tom through a mutual friend just shared the news with me.
Tom was a great blogger, a musician, a cook, a lover of literature, especially Faulkner, and from what I gather, one heck of a good attorney. Though I didn't comment often at his blog because IANAL, I've read every word he published there and at a previous blog (Folo) where he co-blogged with another wonderful blogger that I only knew as Lotus.
As a commenter here, you may recognize Tom as NMC (NMissCommenter), though I occasionally addressed him as Tom because he was not anonymous.
We had some off line conversations over the years as well, and going back in time I exchanged a couple of emails with his wife Joyce. She practiced law with Tom in Oxford. The Freelands were once kind enough to invite me to speak at a professional meeting in Mississippi, though I had to decline with regrets, so I never met them in person.
My condolences to Joyce, Joyce and Tom's daughter, Sarah, Tom's family and his friends.
