About the hair and makeup -- I've often laughed at (or been disgusted by) movies where the woman fights off multiple enemies in filthy surroundings along side her male sidekick and she looks perfect while he looks like he's been through a meat grinder. And it's not because she didn't do her fair share of fighting in the scenes. It is sexist to portray women as incapable of getting dirty, as well as unrealistic.

But I'm not a movie person anyway. I'm not even a TV person. From the descriptions, I might like Pheonix, but I'd rather read it as a novel. The Martian doesn't interest me in the least even if the female characters didn't have good makeup and neat haircuts.

I just might be a curmudgeon on certain subjects. Not all subjects... not yet!

Donna,

The Martian isn't typical of the movies we see. We avoid the blockbusters, sci-fi, and fantasy, but I wanted to try a 3D film, which I haven't seen in maybe 30 years. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed the film, but like I said, it isn't deep stuff.

Saw The Martian today and enjoyed it, though I enjoyed the book more. It captures the survival techniques in much more detail and that is really the story, the (to me) fascinating skills and knowledge the hero brings to bear upon a pretty hopeless situation. Though kudos to the movie for sticking so closely to the book. I was afraid the makers would do all kinds of corny stuff to move it away from hard science. Much relieved that they did not. Pretty good straight up sci-fi, in an old-fashioned sense, but the book is even better. If you like that kind of thing.

We saw 99 Homes last night. Also a good a film.
