Critic favorite Parasite is an entertaining and at times shocking dark satire from acclaimed South Korean director Bong Joon Ho. There are many layers to this film, but broadly speaking it explores aspiration and class in present-day South Korea. Wholly original. No one makes films like this director. 10/10 stars on the X-ometer.
Pedro Almodovar's latest film, Pain and Glory, is about the vicissitudes of pain as inspiration for film-making. I wasn't as wowed by this one as critics were but still a fine, beautifully acted film that rates a 9/10 on the X-ometer.
The Guilty is a Danish thriller set almost entirely in an emergency call center. A cop who is on 911 desk duty pending the outcome of an investigation into his work as a police officer is drawn into an unfolding kidnapping that may not be what it seems. A brilliant film. 95/100 on the X-ometer. This one isn't in theaters, but is available on Amazon Prime.
Finally, Hustlers is the truish account of strippers turned scammers who rip-off Wall Street big shots during the run-up to the market collapse. Good entertainment but you can wait for the streaming release of this one. 85/100
