Sen. Ben Sasse eviscerated President Trump during a phone call with constituents in which the Nebraska Republican accused the president of cozying up to dictators, mistreating women, flirting with white supremacists and irresponsibly handling the coronavirus pandemic.
Sasse’s comments were disclosed by the Washington Examiner, which obtained an audio recording of the call, a campaign telephone townhall with Nebraska voters. Sasse’s spokesman verified that the reporting was accurate, but declined to answer more specific questions such as when the call happened.[...]
“The way he kisses dictators’ butts. I mean, the way he ignores the Uighurs, our literal concentration camps in Xinjiang. Right now, he hasn’t lifted a finger on behalf of the Hong-Kongers,” Sasse said.
“The United States now regularly sells out our allies under his leadership, the way he treats women, spends like a drunken sailor,” Sasse continued. “The ways I criticize President Obama for that kind of spending; I’ve criticized President Trump for as well. He mocks evangelicals behind closed doors. His family has treated the presidency like a business opportunity. He’s flirted with white supremacists.”
In other words, Sasse is saying what's obvious to everyone who hasn't had their brains flushed out and replaced with trash produced by cynical Republican leaders, propagandists in the right-wing media, and the Russian disinformation machine.
About Obama's spending: The budget deficit reached 9.8% of GDP in the year Obama took office, after the financial collapse under Bush. Unemployment was soaring, tax revenue took a huge hit and a massive stimulus was necessary to stop the crash of the economy. It worked. Unemployment rates steadily fell, the economy recovered, the deficit fell to 3% of GDP. Obama handed Trump a vastly improved economy over the one he inherited from Bush. But in his first three years in office, pre-COVID, Trump increased the budget deficit he inherited by 1/3, leaving us terribly positioned to deal with the massive stimulus needed to deal with COVID. And that situation was made far worse by Trump's incomprehensibly incompetent handling of COVID. By the end of June 2020, the deficit reached "13.1% of GDP, a level not seen since WWII." And we are no closer to getting out of this COVID debacle than we were when it began thanks to Trump's reckless stupidity and indifference to life.
