Although [William F.] Buckley has been accused of associating with many members of the so-called "lunatic fringe" in his early days as a conservative activist, he has, in recent years, severely criticized such radical right leaders as Robert Welch of the John Birch Society for damaging the conservative image. He has described the Birchers' propaganda themes as "paranoid and unpatriotic drivel."
Some of the crackpottery of the right subsided after the 50s-60s, but it's back and as crackpotty as ever, if not more so.
